The
Triaize Polders
Polders are
fertile clay soils. Protected from high seas and the threat of flooding by
knowledgable management of the water table.
Created over three hundred years
ago these polders are today given over to grazing cattle and cerial
production.
Over the tens of kilometers of encircling dykes and the
discharge chanels of Canal de Lucon and Canal Vieux with their tidal gates and
locks these polders are protected and seperated from the coast.
This
landscape devoid of trees except the hardy Tamerisk which forms barriers to the
westerly winds is a landscape of black soils where Montagu's Harrier and Marsh
Harriers flourish, where one can spot the 5 species of Herons that frequent the
Vendee and during the autumn the migrating ducks and geese find rest-bite on
their journey south.
