The Point
At Aiguillon sur Mer
Le
plage, Pointe de l'Aiguillon.
The beach at Pointe l'Aiguillon is the farthest south in the
Vendée. The Vendée does continue south for several more kilometres into the Baie
de l'Aiguillon otherwise known as the Anse de l'Aiguillon, but this is mainly
mud flats.
There are several worthwhile beaches on this quiet peninsular,
they are mainly small but if solitude is your penchant then this is a good place
to start.
The waters are not particularly clean as this is the estuary of the
River Lay. There are areas of rocks with interesting pools at low tide and one
can easily collect enough mussels for the family.
The main attractions of the
point besides the beaches are the Nature Reserve, and the off shore mussel
farms. In the Nature Reserve during the autumn and again in the spring birds,
mainly ducks, geese and waders, stop off on their migratory journey. The off
shore mussel farms supply over 20% of national production and as such is one of
France’s main mussel producing areas,.
