On the extreme south of the Grande Baie des Sables d'Olonne is the
beach of Tanchet, it is separated from le grande plage
by an
area of low rocks. The beach is outside the area that is protected by the sea
defences of Chaume and thus receives the full Atlantic swell making it a
favourite break for the surfing community. The beach has surveillance during the
summer and there are facilities both on the beach and close by. During the
summer the beach can get very busy and the area of sand is considerably reduced
at high tide making it difficult to find a suitable space. There is a car
park on the sea front though it is quickly filled up in the summer
months.
If you tire of the beach you can visit the Zoo which is just behind the lake at Tanchet, or you can take
a walk south along the coast road where the scenery is rockier with shallow
cliffs and pine woods.
