Locks At
Pointe Aux Herbes
By
definition a lock is a collection of engineering works,(quays, gates, dams, and
bridges) and buildings including warehouses, residences and lock keepers house
built along a waterway.
Locks were built in the 19th Century on the
approaches to large market towns: Marans, Niort, Fontenay-le-Comte and Lucon
where the waterways of the marshes converged.
The L'ecluse de la Pointe
aux Herbes on the Canal de Lucon is a fine example. Using a system of lockgates
and chambers it was possible for boats to navigate between waters held at
differing levels. Today with the decline of navigatable waterways on the Marais
Poitevin the need for this type of lock has been reduced.
