Le Pont
du Brault
From the
13th Century Brault was the deep water port for Marans. The rocky threshold
allowed dry passage between the flourishing regions of Aquitane and
Poitou.
It function continues to this day when some 800 pleasure craft are logged in by the two resident lock keepers who role extents to flood management. In close coordination with the large dams upstream, the waters are constantly monitored and controlled.
The Sevre Noirtaise is now close to its estuary here. Swelled by the arrival of water from ten discharge channels, the river has just passed the last tidal gate before passing under the bridge and discharging in to the Anse de l'Aiguillon and the ocean.
