L'Ancien
port de Lucon
As early as
the 14th Century Lucon was mentioned as a port, though it is possible that the
Romans who had a fortification here may well have used the waterways.
The
port of Lucon in the 14th Century was link to the sea by the Canal de Lucon and
these waterways were frequented by ships of up to 50 nautical tons (145metric
tonnes) which brought much trade to the town. Local produce were take to La
Rochelle and the Ile de Re and then overseas.
In the 1970-80 the port was
filled in to make a car park, there has been talk that it may
re-excavated.
